According to a survey conducted for the Real Christmas Tree Board earlier this year, shoppers fall into six segments according to when they buy their real Christmas trees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 \u201cPre-Season Achievers\u201d (<em>before<\/em> Thanksgiving) \u2013 14%<br>\u2022 \u201cBlack Friday Checklisters\u201d (during the weekend <em>after<\/em> Thanksgiving) \u2013 33%<br>\u2022 \u201cSeasonal Purists\u201d (first week of December) \u2013 33%<br>\u2022 \u201cMid-Decemberists\u201d (second week of December) \u2013 16%<br>\u2022 \u201cTreecrastinators\u201d (third week of December) \u2013 3%<br>\u2022 \u201cChristmas Eve Traditionalists\u201d (on Christmas Eve) \u2013 1%&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some, when they buy a real Christmas tree is a matter of happenstance. But for 39% of tree buyers, it\u2019s a matter of tradition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There are still real Christmas trees for everyone who wants one.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christmas tree growers have a tradition of their own, said Marsha Gray, executive director of the Real Christmas Tree Board: Making sure there is a real Christmas tree for everyone who wants one, <em>whenever<\/em> they want one,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe industry didn\u2019t run out of trees last year, the year before that, or any previous year,\u201d she said.&nbsp; \u201cAnd we won\u2019t run out of trees this year either.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, 85% of shoppers surveyed said that last year they found the tree they wanted at the first place they shopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gray reminds commentators that no single retailer, lot, nursery, or farm is reflective of the entire industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReports of challenges in any one area can be misleading,\u201d she said, \u201cin the same way that it would be erroneous to assume that just because a restaurant in your neighborhood is out of fries, other restaurants around the country must also be out of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means you can\u2019t just ask, \u201cIs there a shortage?\u201d said Gray. You have to ask two separate questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First, do all retailers have as many trees on hand as they&#8217;d like? For <em>some<\/em>&nbsp;the answer may be no, said Gray.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second, does that mean consumers will go home empty handed? According to Gray, the answer to that is, \u201cDefinitely not. Not at all.\u201d<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always wise to call ahead, be open to different types of trees, and to try additional locations,\u201d said Gray. \u201cBut one way or another, there is an amazing tree out there with your name on it. You just have to go find it. All survey respondents either celebrate\/observe Christmas or display a Christmas tree. Respondents were required to either decide or share in the decision of whether and what kind of Christmas tree to put up in their home each year or influence their home\u2019s decisionmaker. The survey was fielded from August 21 to September 6, 2023.
