From gingerbread cookies and candy canes to a crackling fire and of course, a real Christmas tree \u2013 it is the sights, sounds, and scents of Christmas that make the holidays for many. In fact, a survey fielded by the Real Christmas Tree Board1 <\/sup>showed the number one reason people go real (real Christmas tree, that is) is the scent!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yep, \u201cI like the scent\u201d is the top reason respondents identified for why they chose a real Christmas tree , pulling ahead of other fine reasons such as \u201ctradition,\u201d \u201cit\u2019s fun going to get the tree,\u201d and \u201cmy kids like it.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what is it about the scent that keeps people coming back? 4 out of 5 respondents said it was the unmistakable smell of Christmas itself <\/em>that rose to the top and 80% described the smell of a real Christmas tree as \u201csoothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Survey takers were asked to rank a list of scents strongly associated with Christmas and promptly picked the scent of a real Christmas tree as their favorite. \u201cCookies\u201d came in second, followed by \u201ccinnamon\u201d \u201chot cocoa\u201d and \u201cgingerbread\u201d (in that order) \u201cpeppermint\u201d ranked 6th but beat out further-down finisher \u201copen fire\u201d and \u201croasted chestnuts.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respondents were asked to pick a word to finish the sentence \u201cWhen I smell a real Christmas tree, I feel\u2026\u201d \u201cjoyful\u201d was the word picked more often than any other emotion. Other good feelings followed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

#1 Joyful <\/p>\n\n\n\n

#2 Merry <\/p>\n\n\n\n

#3 Nostalgic <\/p>\n\n\n\n

#4 Calm <\/p>\n\n\n\n

#5 Thankful <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s something about a real Christmas tree that can\u2019t be replaced. In another recent survey, 40% who say they are switching this year say it\u2019s because of the scent.2  <\/sup>52% of those who had a real tree last year say they plan to stick with it because of the scent and 77% of ALL respondents say nothing can replicate the smell of a real Christmas tree in their home.2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
